Age ratings for films and event cinema shown at The Phoenix Cinema are set by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). It is a legal requirement of our licence to enforce these age ratings, so it is important that you follow these guidelines when attending a screening.
If our staff think you look like you may be under the age required to watch the film or event being shown, you will be asked to produce photographic ID. This can be requested at the time tickets are purchased, or when you arrive at the cinema to watch the film. Valid forms of ID include:
- Photocard Driving Licence (full or provisional)
- Passport
- Young Scot Card (available for free to those aged 11 – 25 years, check the Young Scot website for details)
- Official Student Card (which includes a current photo)
- Any other cards that have the ‘PASS’ logo, e.g. Citizen Card, Validate Card, etc.
PLEASE NOTE: Anyone who is unable to provide valid photographic ID at the time of the film screening will be refused entry to the cinema and will not be refunded for their tickets (as per our T&Cs, exchanges may be possible in some circumstances). To avoid disappointment, always bring your ID with you.
For further details on film classifications please visit the BBFC website. There, you can search for films you are interested in and find out why they have received their rating, and you can read more about the BBFC Classification Guidelines. Responsibility for assessing a film’s suitability for a child always remains with the parent, guardian or accompanying adult, as long as the BBFC age classifications given to the film are followed.
