A new programme of free films for young people at The Phoenix Cinema

Monday, August 22, 2022

The Phoenix Cinema will be holding free films for young people aged 15-25 over the next five months.

The Behind the Scenes Youth Screenings, in association with BFI Film Academy Recommends, are free films for young people aged 15-25 years, and are intended to give opportunities to young people to go to the cinema and learn more about film.

The Phoenix Cinema is working in partnership with Glasgow Film Theatre and Eden Court to bring this programme to Orkney for the first time.

The six screenings, which will take place from August to January, are curated by Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) Youth Board, made up of young film fans from Glasgow. Each month the GFT Youth Board select the theme and create pre-recorded additional content to help increase young people’s film knowledge and confidence to engage with independent cinema.

Additional content can range from recorded Q&As with directors to video essays, and is specially created for the selected six cinemas from across the country that are partaking in this new project.

The first screening to be held at The Phoenix Cinema takes place on Tuesday, 30th August at 7pm and will consist of 11 innovative short films made by the talented finalists of the Young Scottish Filmmakers Prize. The screening will be followed by a short, pre-recorded Q&A with the filmmakers.

These screenings will only be open to young people aged 15-25, and tickets are free but should be booked in advance.

Victoria Rhodes, Cinema Supervisor at The Phoenix Cinema said: “As well as being a fun night out, film is a wonderful way to express yourself and take a deeper look at the world around you.

“We are so pleased to be one of just six cinemas chosen to take part in this programme and are looking forward to welcoming young people into our venue, and hopefully get them excited about watching some great films on the big screen!”

Rebecca McSheaffrey, Learning & Youth Engagement Manager from Glasgow Film said: “We are delighted to bring Behind the Scenes Youth Screenings to Orkney in partnership with The Phoenix Cinema in Kirkwall as part of their wonderful programme. We hope that these screenings will encourage young people to watch more independent cinema and to take a chance on films that they may not have otherwise watched!”

Behind the Scenes Youth Screenings is being run in partnership with Glasgow Film Theatre, in collaboration with Eden Court as part of BFI Film Academy Recommends.

Funded by BFI and the National Lottery and supported by Glasgow Film Education Alliance and Film Hub Scotland.
