Picky Sponsorship Press Release 2024/25

Picky invites sportspeople to apply for a free ActiveLife membership

The Picky Sponsorship Programme, available to athletes across Orkney, is now accepting applications for 2024/25.

The Programme awards ten athletes an ActiveLife membership giving them unlimited access to The Pickaquoy Centre and all Orkney Islands Council owned leisure facilities across the county.

The 12-month membership offers successful applicants the same benefits that paying members receive.

The aim of the sponsorship scheme is to help and prepare Orkney's athletes who are living and training locally so they can perform on a regional, national and international stage.

Sponsorship will be allocated through an application process, with athletes required to evidence their commitment to their chosen sport and outline how support from The Pickaquoy Trust would improve their performance and help them achieve their competition goals.

James Linklater, Managing Director of The Pickaquoy Centre Trust, said: “Local athletes once again delivered some inspiring performances this year and the future is bright for sport in Orkney, the recent Orkney Sports Awards very much highlighted this! The achievements and development amongst many of the athletes we sponsor was especially pleasing with a number of recipients competing at the Natwest Island Games in Guernsey last summer, and some even representing their country! Many of our supported athletes also achieved local records or set new personal bests at a number of other competitions throughout this last year of support which is super to see.

“The programme has seen positive growth since its conception five years ago, and we continue to be extremely impressed with the level of dedication and commitment that athletes continue to show year after year.

“Anyone who is serious about their sport realises the value that commitment and consistency brings - whether that be adding strength training to their programme, additional cross training sessions, , or a combination of both. An ActiveLife membership gives free access to the best facilities Orkney has to offer, and this has been tremendously beneficial to the athletes that we have sponsored to date.

“As always, we are keen to get representatives from as many sports as possible, both those that compete as individuals and those who are part of a team. We would like to see applications from athletes that range greatly in their performance level, including those competing internationally to local competitors who are committed and act as role models within our community by inspiring and motiving others.”
