Aqua

Aqua Aerobics

Aqua aerobics is a dance based fitness class, making use of the resistance of the water. The class includes a warmup, aerobic section, muscle strengthening, and some flexibility. It is suitable for weak and strong swimmers, just make the instructor aware of your abilities if you have concerns. It is a fun social class, with a wide variety of music, ideal for all ages, fitness levels and abilities. 


Aqua Natal

A low impact exercise class for pregnant or post pregnant women that improves sleep quality, reduces back pain, enhances well-being and encourages bonding.


Deep Water Aerobics

A fun 45-minute aqua class to music that will help improve your cardiovascular fitness and strength in water. Using equipment such as water dumbbells and noodles, the deep water allows for higher-intensity training sessions that place significantly less stress on your body. This class is suitable for all abilities with the option to workout in shallow water. 


Masters Swimming

Improve your technique, work towards goals and have fun. If you can swim 4 lengths front crawl then you’re ready to go! Ages 14+yrs.


Powerswim

Powerswim is a short intensive class designed for adults who want to improve their swim stroke, technique and fitness level within a coached environment. This class is more suited to advanced swimmers.


Skills & Drills

Designed to help Adults develop their stroke technique and improve fitness. This session is taken by an Instructor giving adults the chance to improve and develop their swimming skills with the Instructor’s advice. Skills & Drills is more suited towards swimmers who can swim lengths but require more work on their technique.


Aquafit

Lively interval and circuits based class in shallow/transitional water (1.25m - 1.30m), using a variety of equipment. 


Strength

Circuits

Circuits offers a combination of strength and cardio exercises with short, rapid movement between intervals.

Using bodyweight, dumbbells and kettle bells, this class is designed to improve strength and endurance while burning calories to give you a full body workout. 

This class is suitable for all levels as individuals adjust pace of exercises to their own level of ability and experience.


Escape Pain six-week programme

Escape Pain is a six-week programme specifically designed for those affected by arthritis. You will attend two sessions per week that will include education and exercise. Our friendly instructors will lead you through the sociable sessions providing plenty of support and encouragement. Escape Pain follow-up class

A follow up class for all those who have previously attended and completed the Escape Pain six-week programme. This instructor led class is a perfect next step for the Escape Pain graduates to help you continue to go from strength to strength as well as having fun with others.


Les Mills BODYPUMP™

Les Mills BODYPUMP™ is a barbell workout for anyone looking to get lean, toned and fit - fast! 

Using light to moderate weights with lots of repetition, BODYPUMP™ gives you a total body workout.

You’ll leave the class feeling challenged and motivated, ready to come back for more.


Les Mills BODYPUMP™

Strength Circuits

Strength circuits is a strength based interval training class designed to improve strength, muscular endurance, body composition and burn fat fast. 

This class is suitable for all fitness levels as each individual adjusts the weight to suit their own level of ability and experience.


Cardio

50+ Badminton

A sociable and inclusive Badminton session for people aged 50 and over. 


50+ Bowls

50+ Bowls are played indoors in the Arena. This is an inclusive group that meets twice each week and is included with ActiveLife. These sessions can be booked online.


Les Mills BODYATTACK™

Les Mills BODYATTACK™ is a high-energy fitness class with moves that cater for total beginners to the more advanced.

It combines athletic and strength movements for a full body workout.

The energising music and motivational instructor will leave you feeling fantastic with a real release of endorphins! 


Boxing Circuits

Boxing circuits is a high energy, boxing based interval training class designed to improve overall fitness and burn fat fast. You will work with a partner through ten circuits focussing on basic boxing movements and light weight and body weight exercises. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.


BOXFIT

BOXFIT is a high energy boxing based class designed to improve cardiovascular fitness, reduce stress and burn lots of calories. You will work in partners throughout the class and will be challenged with varying pad combinations and body weight exercises.


Coach By Color Free Induction

The Coach by Color Induction will take you through the safe and correct bike set up, an explanation of the bike computer and its functions and an overview of our Coach by Color indoor cycling class.

This induction will be followed by a FTP RAMP test which will help you get an accurate FTP score and get the most out of the indoor cycling classes.


Coach By Color® - Indoor Cycling

Our Coach By Color® class brings a simple and intuitive form of communication to group cycling to improve the rider experience and to achieve your fitness results in less time.

The Coach By Color® power programme combines accurate zonal training with stimulating colour to help coach your effort during the class.

The instructor will work you relevant to your exercise ability via the Coach By Color® five coloured training zones - white, blue, green, yellow and red - making the class fun but also extremely inclusive.


Cycle Express

Cycle Express is a 30-minute high energy cycling based class that involves performing sprint intervals with some endurance training on an indoor bike. This feel good class will help improve your health, cardiovascular fitness and mood.

Cycle Express is suitable for all fitness levels.


FTP Ramp Test - Free class

The FTP RAMP test will give you an accurate score that you can then input into the Coach by Color® class to ensure your workout is as relevant to your fitness level as possible (please note, you DO NOT have to complete this to come to the Coach by Color® class but it is highly recommended). 

The test is for all levels, from beginner to elite, and is simply a starting point which gives the rider something to measure their progress as their fitness improves.

FTP, in its simplest form, is a way of helping a rider understand their current level of fitness on a bike. During the FTP RAMP test, every four minutes the WATTs target will increase 25 watts, all you have to do is “KEEP IT GREEN” for as long as you can. Your FTP value and duration are displayed once you have successfully completed the test. The session will take anywhere from 15 - 45 minutes.

By completing the test, you will gain knowledge on:

  • Functional Threshold Power (FTP) test
  • Fitness ability and limits
  • The different Power Zones

These sessions are free but you must book in advance. 


Get Fit

Get Fit is similar to our previous Fit ‘n’ 50+ class and is for those who just want to have fun while exercising!

This is an enjoyable and inclusive workout with great music to help build up cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. The workout will be mainly aerobics-based but will also include strength exercises, balance and stretching. You are guaranteed to leave this class with a smile on your face!

This class is suitable for beginners but more advanced options are available.


Get Fit II

Get Fit II has been put on the Group X timetable due to the popularity of Get Fit! 

This is an enjoyable and inclusive workout with great music to help build up cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. The workout will be mainly aerobics-based but will also include strength exercises, balance and stretching. You are guaranteed to leave this class with a smile on your face!

This class is suitable for beginners but more advanced options are available.


Outdoor Fitness

Outdoor Fitness is a high energy class that includes bodyweight circuits exercises, walking, running and lots of fun!

This is an inclusive class suitable for all abilities, and all exercises can be tailored to suit individual needs.

Bring plenty layers, a water bottle and lots of enthusiasm! If the weather is not suitable to safely carry out the class, customers will be contacted as soon as possible.

Please note, Outdoor Fitness is located on the track and infield. Please check in for the class at one of our Quick Ticket Machines or at reception, then head out to the track. 


Pilates

Pilates is a 60-minute full body workout, designed to build core strength, improve posture and increase flexibility. Pilates is suitable for all levels of fitness. 


Walking Football

Walking Football is a variant of association football and an excellent way of staying fit and healthy. For older people, it has proven to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke while improving blood pressure. Although a low impact sport, the game produces high aerobic activity and improves balance, strength and stamina, all the while having fun with a like-minded group of people.

Players should check-in at reception and meet at the 7-a-side outfield pitch. 


Zumba®

Zumba® combines high energy and motivating music with unique moves and combinations making this a fantastic dance-based fitness workout.

Zumba® is a fun aerobic workout suitable for people of all ages.


Dance Aerobics

Dance Aerobics is an enjoyable and inclusive workout with great music to help build up cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. The workout will be mainly aerobics-based but will also include strength exercises, balance and stretching. This class is suitable for all abilities.


Women's Only Session

We understand that for women in particular, attending a class for the first time, or participating in exercise, can be daunting. That’s why we offer the Women’s Only Sessions held in the Quayside Studio where women can take part in stretching, a weighted circuit routine, cardio machines and more!

Katie Rafferty, fitness expert and personal trainer, will be on hand for an informal chat about health and wellbeing, and give you advice on how exercise can become part of your daily routine. You can drop in at any point within the hour.

These sessions are included in an ActiveLife membership or charged at the general admission price. You can book online or just come along, and please check in at reception or members can use the Quick Ticket Machine on arrival.


Hula Hooping Salsa

Hula Hooping Salsa is about putting the fun into fitness! It's a brilliant workout incorporating body movement and foot work to Latin rhythms. This is a great class that will get your heart rate up while offering a full body workout.


Mind-Body

Les Mills BODYBALANCE™

Ideal for everyone, Les Mills BODYBALANCE is the yoga based class that will improve your mind, your body and your life. 

During BodyBalance, an inspired soundtrack plays as you bend and stretch through a series of simple yoga moves and embrace elements of Tai Chi and Pilates. 

You’ll strengthen your entire body, especially your core, and leave the class feeling calm and centred.


Chair Based Exercise

Chair Based Exercise is a gentle class that will guide you safely through stretches, dumbbell exercises, body weight and balance to help improve your strength, mobility, suppleness and circulation.

This class is suitable for beginners and those with reduced mobility. Please don't hesitate to contact Emma if you have any further questions. 


Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates helps to develop the entire body in a balanced way. The class uses bodyweight and small equipment like bands, balls and weights to improve your strength, flexibility, breathing, body control and mental health.

It doesn’t matter what age, whether you are healthy or injured, sporty, or have never played a sport in your life. Mat Pilates is a great workout that will improve the health and wellbeing of your mind and body.


Mindful Yoga

Mindful Yoga has an emphasis on awareness of the body and breath, working gently and slowly while still developing flexibility and strength. This combined with a focus on relaxation during movement and the final relaxation period creates a sense of calm and well-being which we can take off our mat into our daily lives.

Mindful Yoga is suitable for all abilities as we work within our own comfortable range of movement.


Movement Matters Xtra

Movement Matters Xtra (MMX) will focus on strength, balance and flexibility exercises to help improve your overall health by building resistance, stamina and an awareness of breath to support movement. 

Chair and standing based this is ideal for the 50+ and those recovering from injury.  MMX will complement the Movement Matters session.


Relaxation

Relaxation offers a combination of gentle movement and focussed breathing.

The class starts out with gentle movement and intentional breathing exercises followed by deep relaxation. The last five minutes of the class will incorporate movement to be fully awake before leaving.

This class is suitable for all levels and will benefit anyone looking for techniques to help maintain a calm body and mind.


SB Elevate® Orkney

SB Elevate® Orkney is a fun, flexible and free dance programme for people living with multiple sclerosis (MS). Family members, friends and carers are welcome, and no previous dance experience is required. Simply bring comfortable clothing to move and enjoy the class. Every class is accompanied by live music, followed by some tea and biscuits during the social café. Contact Fitness Manager, Katie Rafferty, for more information.


Stretch & Flex

Stretch & Flex is a 30-minute session that will help you learn and perform stretches to improve mobility and flexibility while helping you reduce the risk of injury.

This class is suitable for all levels and includes stretching options for the beginner to the advanced.


Yoga Align

Yoga Align is about bringing alignment to the body through the physical asanas, breathwork and stillness of the mind. 

Focus will be on the breakdown of asanas to be delivered in a meaningful way to bring about change to one’s own practice. 

Utilising the breath is key to ease of movement and the calmness of the mind will be promoted to aid concentration and awareness through the asanas. 

This is an ideal class to accompany Yoga for Strength.


Yoga for Strength

Yoga for Strength is designed to improve strength, stamina and flexibility. 

A combination of dynamic flowing and held postures to increase muscle resilience through deeper stretching and breathing.

This is an ideal class to accompany Yoga Align.


Things to remember...

Wear cool, comfortable, practical sports clothing
Only wear training shoes
Respect other users - switch off your mobile
Keep hydrated - bring a water bottle
Obtain help from the instructor if you need it
Use and replace equipment safely
Tickets should be shown to the instructor when you arrive

Make your booking up to 14 days in advance
Use a debit/credit card to book by phone if you don't have a membership card
Set yourself up for the class - arrive 10 minutes early
If you need to cancel, please give 6 hours notice
Collect your ticket at least 5 minutes before the start of your class

All equipment used in the class is provided. 

Group Exercise Etiquette 

  • You must pay or produce your ActiveLife card at the customer service desk or quick ticket machines prior to entering the Group X class, and produce the ticket on entry to the instructor.
  • You are not permitted to pick up other users Group X tickets.
  • Class participants must check in to Group X classes at least 5 minutes before start of class, due to equipment set up (where applicable) and pre-class instructor guidance.
  • Anyone who arrives after the start of the class will be refused entry as it is disruptive for the rest of the class and taking part in the full warm up is essential.
  • You are not permitted to chew gum during class.
  • Mobile phone use is not permitted for the duration of a Group X class. Mobile phones must be placed on silent or turned off.

Minimum Ages

Please check minimum ages below for each type of Group X class, all 12 and 13-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult:

Cardio Classes: 12+ years  
Strength Classes: 16+ years 
Mind & Body Classes: 12+ years  
Aqua Classes: 12+ years
